Dry Carbon vs Forged Carbon vs Wet Carbon: Choosing Bucket Seats

How carbon fibre seat shells are made, what each process means for weight, strength and price, and which suits your customers.

By the Auto Accessory Factory engineering team ·

Key takeaways
  • Dry carbon (prepreg) is the lightest and stiffest, and costs the most.
  • Wet lay-up carbon is cheaper but heavier and less consistent.
  • Forged carbon gives a marbled look and works well for trims and inserts.
  • Always check brackets, belt routing and airbag implications.

Carbon fibre bucket seats are sold under many labels. Understanding how the shell is produced helps you compare quotes fairly and set the right expectations with customers.

Dry carbon (prepreg)

Dry carbon uses sheets pre-impregnated with a measured amount of resin, laid in a mould and cured under heat and pressure, often in an autoclave. The result has a high fibre-to-resin ratio, low weight and excellent stiffness. It is the choice for track-focused GT3 RS-style seats and carries the highest cost.

Wet carbon

Wet lay-up applies liquid resin to dry fabric by hand. It is cheaper and flexible for small batches but heavier, with more resin and less consistent strength. It suits cosmetic parts more than structural shells.

Forged carbon

Forged carbon is pressed from chopped fibres and resin, creating a marbled pattern. It is visually striking and strong in multiple directions, and works well for trims, steering wheel inserts and some shells.

Choosing for your market

  • Track and motorsport customers: dry carbon with model-specific brackets.
  • Street performance and show cars: dry or forged carbon with premium trim.
  • Budget-sensitive buyers: carbon-look or fibreglass shells with carbon skin.

Trim and safety

Ask about the bracket and slider system, whether seat-belt routing matches the vehicle and whether side airbags in the original seat are affected. Always follow local regulations for seat replacement.
